What is an abortion?
An abortion is the termination of a pregnancy through a procedure. If a woman falls pregnant and the pregnancy is unwanted, women have the option to end the pregnancy, so they do not give birth to the child.
What are the types of abortions available?
There are two types of abortions available; an early medical abortion and a surgical abortion. The procedure you have is dependent upon how many weeks you are pregnant as well as your health. However, all abortions are carried out at an abortion clinic.
Early medical abortion pill
The early medical abortion pill is a method of abortion used for women up to 10 weeks of pregnancy. It works by taking two tablets which both have different roles in order to terminate a pregnancy.
The first tablet taken is referred to as mifepristone. This tablet works by blocking progesterone. The tablet is then inserted in the vagina or mouth against the gum and releases a hormone called prostaglandin. This hormone occurs naturally in the body and further helps the uterus to contract. Acting on this, it will bring on the abortion.
Does an abortion hurt?
Having an abortion feels different for everyone – many people describe it as uncomfortable and others describe it as painful. Your level of ‘pain’ can depend on a range of factors including:
- The medication used.
- The way in which the abortion was performed.
- How far into your pregnancy you are.
- How much cramping you have.
Along with the above, there are other factors which contribute towards the pain of an abortion.
